Preston Guild 2012PRESTON GUILD MERCHANT 2012

Many Rotarians in the North West will have heard of Preston Guild and will probably be aware that it is celebrated once every twenty years.  The Guild Merchant is an ancient right conferred on the town by Royal Charter granted by Henry II in 1179.

At the 1952, 1972 and 1992 Guilds, the Rotary Club of Preston was asked to organise the despatch of Emblems and Scrolls around the world for ex-Prestonians to sign and send back greetings to the town.  This was successfully achieved with the help of Rotary Clubs throughout Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

The City Council has approached the Club to undertake this task once again, and Club members, with the help of Rotary Club of Preston Guild, have been looking into the feasibility of this in the present economic climate.  We have, unfortunately, encountered many technical problems which are hindering the exercise; problems which did not exist in the past.  In consequence of this, it has been decided to cut back very significantly on the number of cities to be visited.  This means that in the USA only New York, Chicago, Boston, Detroit and San Francisco will be visited, and in Canada, Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto.  This is in contrast to 30 cities visited previously.

Similarly, the cities to be visited in Australia will be: Sydney, Melbourne, Geelong, Brisbane (between 12th January and 4th March 2012) and Perth plus Auckland and Christ Church in New Zealand.

NOW TO THE POINT! This time, to overcome the problems referred to already, the Emblems and Scrolls will be taken by hand, and efforts are being made to find persons who will be willing to include them in their luggage when visiting relatives or holidaying in any of these countries between September 2011 and July 2012.  As you can see, certain cities in Australia are covered already, but much needs to be done to fill the many gaps.

Are there any Rotarians out there who can help?  Full details of the exercise and the requirements will be explained to anybody interested by contacting:
